Osprey - Majestic Bird of Prey
Ospreys are found pretty much worldwide. They suffered a setback during the years of unrestricted pesticide use but populations are now on the rise. They nest in high places, typically near water and feed almost exclusively on fish, although sometimes taking small mammals.
With a wingspan reaching six feet and an average lifespan of 7-10 years the Osprey is second only to the eagle in size and strength. The eagle is the Osprey's sole predator, usually confining its attack to stealing an Osprey's catch.
A typical Osprey nest will be made of rough twigs and branches and can be quite large. I caught the Osprey pictured below attempting to nest at the top of a World War One Memorial measuring over 110 feet in height. It eventually gave up for lack of a suitable surface.

STOPNice photos! I used to volunteer for the Audubon Society in Maine doing canoe tours in Scarborough. I still volunteer for them but now doing cleanups at beaches around NYC so the birds don't choke on stuff when they are migrating north.
I spend most of my time in New York City but my next favorite place is Maine. In fact, from my limited perspective, the rocky coast of Maine starts right here in New York. South of us there is sand, and north is rocky coast. A day on a sandy beach is fine, but you can spend a lifetime exploring a rocky coast. Thanks for the good work. Wish I were more like you.
I used to live in Maine and my son and grandson live there. I LOVE the Maine coast!
