They are generally devoid of scales
They have large pectoral fins while the pelvics are reduced.
What makes them amazing?
In addition to having an impressive set of teeth, these fish have antennae or combs on their heads that are used to detect chemical substances from other fish or perceive movements in the water to defend their burrow or feed.
They are very fast to attack and can expand their jaws making their mouths very large when fighting against other fish. The intimidating coloration of the mouth, combined with the extreme nature of its size (which can be up to four times its closed size) allows the larger male to establish dominance over the smaller one.
