Rats hear up to 90kHz. In contrast human hearing range is up to 20kHz. This is a huge difference. When rats communicate they produce sounds much higher than we can perceive. At different frequencies they show different emotions. When being tickled they produce a very high pitched sound about 50kHz. Here's is a video from National Geographic's youtube channel of an experiment with rats being tickled in the name of science.
