Hippopotamuses are a family grouping several species of mammal ketartiodactyl relatively close genetically cetaceans and to a lesser extent suidae and Ruminantia. They were traditionally stored in ungulates before phylogenetic studies revealed them as ketartiodactyls.

Many species have disappeared but there are still two alive: the best-known species, the so-called amphibious hippopotamus and the dwarf hippopotamus. Their life expectancy is around forty years.
