Story Of The Captured Herd From Wild Horse Mesa
Greetings Steemians!
As I said in a post I made around a week ago, I'm here to post about my experience in helping to save a herd from illegal capture by an unscrupulous rancher that lives near the mesa. The horses pictured above are the very herd that a week prior to the pic were going to be heading to Mexico to be slaughtered and turned into dog food. We happen to be driving down past his ranch on the eastern side of the mesa when we witnessed the capture. @jan-mccomas and I made some calls, sent emails, and facebook messages and the right people were contacted. The next day after Jan and the woman who runs the Wild Horse Sanctuary on the mesa cornered the rancher and the horses were eventually freed. They migrated to the other side of the lake, running off the herd that usually hangs down there and the one we usually feed the most. The next week we went out to feed this herd, but did find our herd. We found them while feeding two other herds as they came down from the trees when they saw us.
This is the herd we usually feed that used to hang down by the reservoir, led by the Stallion named Jet Blue. This photo was done by @jan-mccomas
We had spotted a herd we didn't recognize at first. As we pulled off to get ready to feed them, our herd came down through the trees, and then yet another third herd came down a few minutes later. This led to some interesting interactions.

We fed the herds as we normally do and left them to explore more to return an hour later. The young were playing with horses from the other herds, mating, etc. The elder stallions of each respective herds were squaring off. It was very interesting to see.
This is me feeding Jet Blue some treats.

I put together a video collage. Most of the photos were taken by me but a few by @jan-mccomas. The song sample used is one of my own called With My Heart. Listen to the entire song on Choon https://choon.co/tracks/0jie5sqy1d8/with-my-heart/
It was a very memorable day that day, and as I type this Wednesday morning, I plan on going there again today. I hope you guys all enjoyed the telling of my experience on Wild Horse Mesa.
PEACE <3

Peace, Love, and Horns up \m/
I am so glad they are safe, and the picture of them galloping in the distance made me emotional. Such magnificent creatures.
They really are. I've been going up there once a week for about a year now and have gotten to know these herds. It's really cool to see how other animals behave and how curious they are about humans. It's such a shame that some humans only see an excuse to make a little extra money. One even compared them to "weeds that should be gotten rid of" it's just sick to me.
Here they breed horses and ponies (ponies :(((() to eat their meat... as a whole life vegetarian (and not preaching against meat eaters though I ask for moderation as we are all aware meat industry is not that pretty) but they breed them to eat them... They're usually free in the fields and I befriended a particular herd, they were tagged so someone's but they seemed pretty much abandoned... for a year, maybe longer I fed them carrots and they would come to my call like puppies... one day they vanished... and I ohpe they were moved to another field... I'll never know :(
Also with wild animals... this Earth belongs to them as much as to us... we are the ones overpopulating it by the way... but sigh... :(
thanks for showing a heart!
I would imagine if a lot of folks out there looked at the non human animals as just other people who also inhabit the Earth as you said, that they would care about what happens to them.
Thank you for the kind comments <3
its so great to see these wonderful photos you guys took, and an amazing work to help wild animals out there brother! <3 beautiful horses :D
Thanks bro! I just returned from feeding the horses again today. Fed 5 herds today, although my favorite herd has been gone for a couple weeks now. They are roaming for grass and prepping for winter.
What a fantastic and worthwhile hobby you have!
Thank you very much <3 Yes it has turned into something very rewarding. We're actually considering starting a non profit to get more folks into helping these horses. Winter is approaching and they are already getting harder to keep up with and feed. We brought 5 bails of hay up with us and they were gone very quickly between the 5 herds we found this past Wednesday.
A very cool post sir!
Everything looking better for you it seems ! ( I hope)
Thank you <3
Yes it seems I needed a distraction so Ive kinda thrown myself into this one. It's definitely helped.
Yeah, good strategy, mate - Introspection/inactivity, can be very detrimental to your mental health..
