Back On The Homestead

howdy folks and greetings from the Great Plains of North Texas!

The rain has brought welcome relief to the parched soil here and the
lawns and ponds are grateful. Normally when we have rain for more
than one day there is significant flooding because of our black clay
soil which doesn't easily accept water.

This causes flooding everywhere and you have to be cautious when
you're out driving all but the interstates. Here's what we see along the
county roads here:

These markers are everywhere, presumably to let you know how deep
the water is if it's over the road. But this time was strange because
there was no flooding or water on the roads, the land was so dry with
those large cracks it just soaked it all up.

Well, except for this county road close to ours, this is the only one
we've seen that isn't paved and it's a mess. There's a large low place
in it like a draw or gully and people are always getting stuck down
there, this clay is too slippery.

Our county taxes at work! I have no idea why they don't pave it. And
of course people's GPS systems always try to take them that route
down that mud hole of a road! lol.

We did have some excitement last night, for us anyway. One of our
neighbor's calves got out from their pasture through the fence and
onto our property, the little guy was separated from his mamma and
boy was he upset!

Here he his watching Jack because Jack was inside the fence
barking at him. He kept running back and forth along the fence
trying to get back to him mom on the other side.

here's Jack:

We finally got him to a spot that had a gap between wires were the
coyotes jump through and he saw that gap and shot through there
like a rocket! His mom was on the other side and they both took off
away from us as fast as they could. lol. It was a blessing to see.

Mrs. J had called the neighbors and they were with us trying to guide
the little guy so after he jumped through the fence we found the spot
where he'd gotten and and then we stood around and talked for about
an hour. That was our big event for this week because no one ever
comes to visit so that was a treat.

These guys warned us to keep an eye out for coyotes because they've
been getting more and more numerous and less afraid of humans.
They told us that a friend of theirs pulled into their driveway and a
big coyote jumped up on their hood and was trying to get to them
through the windshield!

We'd never heard of anything like that, the thing must have been
mad with rabies or something.

That's it for today folks, God bless you all!

ps- ya know....you might just be a redneck if:

On your first date you had to ask your Dad if you can borrow the keys
to the tractor!

We just got a turd floater here ourselves. It doesn't rain then when it does rain it gets too muddy.

Well, it won't be too dusty then.

Take care, that coyote was not right! If you dont carry all the time, start for a little while anyway.

A tractor date is pretty fancy! I only managed a ride in the back seat of the station wagon, with a chauffeur, LOL! :)

You live in some interesting place . Are Coyotes dangerous? I heard they can go for a small child . Is this true?

howdy there blanchy! well normally they are skiddish and afraid of people but they have been getting much braver because they've been breeding with wild or loose dogs and they's started running in packs.

In fact I did a post about one of the attacks on a friends' brother. he was out hunting, a pack of coyotes came around a group of trees running at him, he shot two of them before they got to him and he fought like a wild man using his rifle as a club and finally drove them off.

His mistake is that he had a bolt action rifle instead of a high capacity semi-auto.

They could very well go for a small child but I don't know what circumstances in what that would happen. they are mostly nocturnal, we hear them howling, yipping and barking at night.
snakes are really dangerous here, I've shot more than I can count, those and wild hogs are extremely dangerous, alot of hunters get killed by them.

That sounds like a perfectly exciting evening. The coyotes are a little unnerving, but otherwise, just right!

howdy there tamaralovelace! yes well, no one ever comes to visit us so it was nice to talk to our neighbors. The coyote situation is strange because they aren't behaving like they normally do, but they are interbreeding with wild dogs and that's the main problem because they lose their fear of humans. thanks so much for commenting!

Oh wow..that could be disastrous. Not good for the coyote nor the humans.

yes Ma'am ..no the stupid coyotes have to die. they used to be very afraid but since they've been interbreeding with wild dogs they've become too nasty, freaky and dangerous. like a creepy hybrid accident or something ya know? do they have them where you are? where are you anyway?
thanks so much for commenting!

They say there are coyotes here (in Florida), though I've never seen one. We also have black bear, foxes and of course, gators lol. Oh and we have fire ants...hate them....do you have fire ants?

Hi @janton. I thought coyotes were the size of a fox or a medium dog. Maybe there are just too many of them and you need to shoot a few.

well sir, coyotes come in all sizes and now even more so since they are interbreeding with loose and wild dogs around here. We even saw a huge black and white one which was totally bizarre!
I'd love to shoot them but I rarely see them, maybe a few seconds while they run across our yard. they're mostly nocturnal.

Good evening @janton! Good thing you saw this cutie. Yeah, I bet he was scared! Glad mother nature didn't forget about you folks out there 🌞
How's the pond doing? Filling back up?

howdy there squirrelbait! well, the pond didn't seem to fill up any but we were talking to our neighbors like I said, and they said it's been so dry here before that our ponds totally dried up! yikes, that's our emergency water supply if the collapse happens!

Yup! You need to get out there and dance for some more rain.

hahaha! that's a funny image, I don't think that's happening!

Glad to hear that you were able to get through the rains without any flooding. That's never fun, and can be quite dangerous with water flowing over the road. I've been in a vehicle a couple of times moving through water up to the doors and there's always a chance that the vehicle is going to choke and stall.

It's good to hear that the ground did it's job and basically swallowed it all up.

Calf sounds like my granddaughter. Always getting out, down, whatever, then wanting to immediately do the opposite, but not really wanting help to do it, yet not really capable of doing it alone. Always wanting mama, unless mama's been the only one around all day.

haha! the calf like your granddaughter! that does sound similar, it's cross-species behavior.

Go Jonboy go!

Lol calves are too much fun and excitement 😂

haha! yes sir they can be when they get out, those little suckers are fast! thanks for reading and commenting sir!

Ah! the little things and little moments in life. Such is what life is made up of.
All's well that ends well with that little fellow.
Glad that you had that much needed rain, but unfortunately, the muddy road looks kind of hard to manoeuvre.
You seem to live in a very secluded dangerous part of the state.

howdy sir quotes-haven! yes sir well our property is secluded but not too dangerous, I mean there are dangerous things like poisonous snakes and the crazy coyotes are getting strange and many are huge from interbreeding with dogs but other than that it's nice, you just have to constantly be on the alert for snakes when the weather is warm and we go for runs and walks down our county road which is a gravel road with pastures on both sides so the coyotes are around but after we've seen such strange things from the coyotes we just make sure we're armed when we go out.
what about you, do you live in the country?

I guess you are use to it, after living there for so long.
I lived on a small farm when I was young - a few chickens and ducks and some small vegetable plots. That was a long time ago.
I live in the jungle now - concrete jungle. :-)

haha! well sir, there are plenty of advantages to living in the concrete jungle too. Like delivery food! we're too far out for that. but I don't like traffic and alot of strangers around so this is good for me. thank you sir.

True. Keep well, sir.

good day this fine Friday sir!
