The Danta or Tapir
The Danta or Tapir is the Venezuela's largest native mammal, exceeding two meters and 200 kg of weight. Having a robust and elongated body, and with a small trunk, is the closest relative of the rhinos. Its natural habitat has been the jungle at the south of the Orinoco river, although it has also been seen in certain areas of the Andean region and in the Guajira peninsula. It is currently an endangered species due to hunting to obtain its meat, compared to cattle's meat. The Danta or Tapir is the animal ridden by the goddess Maria Lionza, so for many believers of Venezuelan spiritualism, it is a sacred animal. This is a Hecho Criollo.
