A ban that could save billions of bees

in #animal7 years ago (edited)

Since mankind, bees have been on a decline, we have destroyed their and many other animals habitat, polluted their air, use of pesticide and many more factors. The majority is our fault and it's crazy because we have a bee to thank for every one in bites off food we take. Honey bees perform about 80% of all pollination worldwide. Each day a single bee colony can pollinate 300 million flowers. 70 out of the top 100 human food crops are pollinated by bees.

But what is killing the bees?
The main reason according to scientists are due to pesticides, drought, habitat destruction, nutrition deficit... all of these causes are related and we know that us humans are responsible for the two most damaging ones: pesticides and habitat loss.

Life and reproduction rate:
In the summer worker bees live about 6 weeks, in the winter they live several months. During spring and summer the colonies produce new worker bees, and in the winter this process slows down. Over the winter a bee colony can decline by 5-10 percent but in the spring the colony replaces the lost bees. In a bad year a colony could lose 15 to 20% of its bees. U.S National Agricultural Statistics show a honey bee decline from about 6 million hives in 1947 to 2.4 million in 2008, that is a 60% reduction.

In the U.S. the working bee colonies per hectare has declined by 90% since 1962, the bees cannot keep up with the pace the winter die-off rates and habitat loss.

The big chemical companies such as Bayer, Syngenta, BASF, Monsanto and many others turn a blind eye when it comes to blaming it on pesticide and they advocate no change in pesticide policy. They still sell their poison to the world's farmers and benefit a lot from it.

What has Europe done?
After a report from Rabobank, stating that annual European die-offs have reached 30-35% and the colonies-per-hectare count is down 25%. Another scientific report was the European Food Safety Authority, they found that pesticides (nicotine-based clothianidin, imidacloprid and thmetoxam) posed risks for bees, these pesticides were used in soils, on foliage and embedded in seeds, these pesticides accumulate in individual bees and within entire colonies, if they don't die they can experience systemic effects, development effects, weakness and loss of orientation.
But in May, the European Commission responded, they adopted a two year ban on the pesticides to assess the recovery rate of the bees and to possibly imply a long-term ban on the pesticides.

What about the U.S.?
Instead of looking into banning them, they support them. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency continues to allow the use of these deadly pesticides , even though there has been a report made by the U.S. Department of Agriculture stating the dangers of the bee colony collapse.
To add to this in 2014, Obama signed the "Monsanto Protection Act" this was written by Monsanto lobbyists and gives biotech companies immunity in federal U.S. courts from damages to people and the environment caused by their commercial compounds.

So the Europe has banned the deadly pesticides for two years, meaning the bee colony should grow and realize where the problem was, that the people to blame are the chemical companies supplying these pesticides that kill bees that are so important for the human race to keep living and staying alive. But it's not just the big chemical companies, others that destroy the bees and other animals habitat aren't helping. And in the U.S. after what Obama signed the big chemical companies can still use pesticide, that could harm the bees and humans and can still get away with it.
