The Philippine eagle, as also known as “monkey-eating eagle” is one of the 3 largest eagles in world and can be found in the 4-major island in the Philippines: Eastern Luzon, Samar, Leyte, and Mindanao. The eagle estimated that only few hundred pairs remain in the world.

One of the rarest and most powerful birds in the world is the Philippine eagle. It is critically endangered species, mainly due to massive loss of habitat resulting from deforestation and continued development in the Philippines. Killing a Philippine eagle is punishable under Philippine law by 12 years in prison and heavy fines.

Philippine eagle has an average length 95 cm (3 ft. 1 in) for males and 105 cm (3 ft. 5 in) for females. The wing span is about seven feet and the weight is up to 14 pounds. The nape of the bird’s neck is covered in elongated feathers, which form a shaggy, “like lion” crest, which is cream and brown in color. The back of the Philippine eagle is dark brown, while the underside and underwings are white.

The Philippine eagle can live between 30 and 60 years of age. They can only have one mate for a life time, unless one of the pair dies, in which case the remaining individual will seek out another mate. The breeding cycle is long it will last for two years. The nest can be found at the top of the tallest tree.

The southern island of Mindanao is home to most of the eagles. In 1992 the first Philippine eagles was produce or hatched at the Philippine eagle in center in Barangay Malagos at the Calinan district in Davao city. He weighs 134.6 gram at his birth. He was named Pag-asa (in Filipino term), or HOPE. Pag-asa was bred through artificial insemination and was hatched through combined artificial and natural incubation technique taught by the World Center for Birds of Prey. The animal was the first offspring of Philippine eagles Diola(mother) and Junior(father).
