A female gorilla stands at about 1.2 meters (4 ft) on her hind legs. A silverback male can reach up to 2.1 meters (7 ft) although the average height of a male is 1.7 meters (5 ft 6 in ). Males are called "silvers" when hair on their backs turns silver in mature adulthood.
