There are supply problems all the way up the food chain.
If you are a 200k SP Orca then you can support yourself, everyone below needs help from others.
Orcas support Dolphins who've worked hard for a year or two, and at a guess I would say the ratio is 1/20, although many of these orcas don't vote/spread their vote.
Dolphins have a tougher task, they want to grow into middle class but so many of them try to support minnows and redfish with initiatives and contests - and there are 1 million accounts smaller than a dolphin 😞
Finding the balance between looking down to lift people, and looking up for your own support is key I think. Spend too much time looking down and it may impede your growth.

With what I can see through my limited visibility is that Dolphins are picking up the majority of the slack / support.
What exactly is middle class. I assumed it was Minnow I - Dolphin. Your still struggling but better control of your situation. A balance has to be accomplished for sustainability
Based on the numbers, 100 SP or more puts you in the top 2-5% - so does the middle class start there?
I would use @tarazkp's 30-60k SP as a guide, at that level it's possible to support a few (but not many) minnows on their way to becoming Dolphins.
We will just keep pushing forward.
The reality is that some will never reach even the minnow level as a result one has to find balance not only in who to support but selfgrowth also. Selfgrowth is one of the hardest things to understand on how to accomplish.
Steem is just like a big ocean where plankton and minnows hardly can grow to orcas or whales. Most of them born as plankton and die as plankton. This is very unfair society where the gap between the top and the bottom is unfathomable. Persons who joined this platform, earlier had a great chance to grow but with the passing of time, struggle for success will also increase.
