Cahokia Mounds to host Mississippian conference Saturday

COLLINSVILLE (Heartland Newsfeed) -- A conference covering the cultural tradition of the ancient Mississippian tribes will take place this coming weekend.

Mississippian period

The state historic site at Cahokia Mounds is hosting the conference Saturday, July 28, with kickoff at 8:30 a.m.

The event's open to the public, with a $5 registration fee at the door of the Interpretive Center auditorium.

The Mississippian tribes lasted four centuries in the Midwestern United States, later migrating southbound.

As a result of their southbound migrations, large permanent agricultural settlements were left behind, along with platform temple mounds.

Cahokia Mounds was the largest tribal settlement in North America.

18 archaeologists from across the Midwest will offer presentations throughout the day regarding current research and excavations from many sites.

Items of discussion include current excavations and analysis of many items.

Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m. with presentations beginning at 9:00 a.m. in 15-minute segments with a lunch break from 11:45 a.m. until 1:30 p.m.

The conference is a joint venture of the historic site and the museum society.

The facility maintained by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources is located near Collinsville just off of Exit 6 (Interstates 55/70) and Exit 24 (Interstate 255) along Collinsville Road.
