What Is It Like To Be An Anarchist In Japan?
A couple days ago, a follower of the Voluntary Japan Facebook Page asked this question:
"How is it living as an Anarchist in Japan? Honest Inquiry."
I answered as follows, and wanted to share this answer here on the blog, because it is a question that comes up quite often.
My reply:
Some friends at a Bitcoin Meetup in Tokyo.
Hey there, Bennet! Man, it’s actually a lot more “voluntaryist” than most imagine. I talk about some of it in detail in this podcast, if interested:
It’s a bit long, but basically, here in Japan:
- People mind their own business
- There is less bureaucracy stifling small, private businesses
- There is a lot of trade and barter in small communities
- Enthusiasm and innovation in the crypto space is huge
- I can drink beer outside 😉
- Unschooling is doable
- Vaccine choice exists
- Nakedness and the body are not “shameful” things
- People usually do not sue others here
And the list goes on.
To be sure, there are some horribly draconian and suffocating and collectivist aspects of the state/culture here as well, but to me, these negative elements exist in any country, in different manifestations.
I feel more free here than I ever did in the states. And, for me, the good outweighs the bad.
I think this surprises many folks who think that perhaps Japan would be one of the worst places in the developed world for an anarchist.
Most folks I know here personally are pretty libertarian in how they live. They just don’t call it by that name, or see it as a “philosophy,” as such, I suppose.
Thanks for the great question.

Very cool insight about Japan, glad you are taking advantage of the emphasis on harmony in that culture!
Arigatou!
I was so impressed when I saw on the TV the Japanese fans picking up the rubbish after their team lost in the World Cup.
The "mindfulness of others" here can definitely be very nice, and is an encouraging thing.
...you a nudist brah? I don't remember a post for world naked gardening day...
Heh heh. Not a big fan of the whole Catholic body guilt malaise cast over the Western world.
Catholic. Say no more fam. Lol
Being left alone as long as you're not harming others or their property?! /gasp I bet crime there is pretty damned low too, right?
