I seem to recall some significant numbers of folks in the late 19th and early 20th centuries that made anarchy a household word.
Tens of thousands were killed in battles against government forces. Propaganda by deeds was abandoned when it proved ineffective, but there was certainly a ferment of ideas at the time, and there was no lack of anarchists.
There have been freedom fighters for as long as there has been consciousness, forever basically. However the idea of a voluntary society (anarchy) has always been seen as radical. The change we are seeing now, is self rule seems the most rational choice.
