Very interesting take on the subject. I am very passionate about food and think that the way that the entire industry has been corrupted is disgusting. Companies like Subway that you mention above all get away wtih serving non-food items as food because of money. A waste product is cheaper than food and this way the can help their buddy at Used Rubber CO out. They lobby politicians to put their interests - making money - ahead of the people. This is only another symptom of the disease that is GREED.
We see it in the healthcare system where out of pocket lab work can cost well over a grand; we see it in the public transit system, crippled by the selfish vision of every American driving a car; we see it in schools where some low income children are made to work for food.
I believe that more inter-community (I'm looking at you, Steemit!) reliance would solve many of these problems, Especially with food. I know that the farm to table cafe in my town isn't using wood pulp as filler in their milkshakes. I know that my neighbor lets his cows eat grass because I see them outside. I know what grows in my garden. With food as so many other things, we have to rely on ourselves and our communities because our government has proven time and time again that it can not be trusted to put the interests of its people first!
The more centralized a society becomes the more easily corruptible it becomes. Prior to the advent of the welfare state people used to rely on each other. A time when people actually knew their neighbors and had community spirt. The welfare state changed that. Neighbors don't even wave hello, let alone rely on each other. People used to forge relationships because it was in their best interest. Of course the ancillary benefits of networking has limitless potential. When people were down they would go to their local church or community gatherings. It is much easier to find a job when everyone you know is interested in you getting one. Everything government touches it seems to destroy.
