I totally hadnt realized yet that Lego Batman was so different in it's message than Lego Movie. I enjoyed it, though not as much as the original, but now that you point it out it is a bit of a shame that its message is to just follow the rules. Not only is that not what Lego Movie was about, it's also not what Batman is about.

I wouldn't say that "just follow the rules" is the message of The Lego Batman Movie but it certainly is a point that the movie makes. The message is more about teamwork.
