Part 4 The Finalleeey! The Renovation of Our Squat in Oslo, Norway - Living Free

in #anarchy6 years ago

Time to save the outside with fresh paint!

We had done the inside enough, we left the painting and decorating inside because that's just an image thing in society, a waste of money and well.. This is a squat after all! We started at the front of the cabin on the outside, that's where my bedroom is with sanding and scrapping the flaky old paint. The paint that was last used was of very high standard, and actually I have never seen stuff like it, or maybe it was the undercoat that was special, because anyway it had only been painted one time (you can see the layers of different colour's on wood when you scrape the loose stuff away) and luckily enough we got there just in time as patches of bare wood started to get exposed.

The Damage..

It still looks like this today (the corner beam), this is the corner where a tree had been dripping water on it and was also getting blown against the cabin wall when wet and stormy, which isn't good as you can see. First the branches would slowly take the paint off and then water travels along the branch and gets onto the wall and if its a part of a wooden building that receives no sunlight your in trouble as it wont dry out and will rot away. I love trees, but if you leave them to grow within 3 m of your home then they will eventually end up damaging your home if they are not trimmed. There's an old farm building up the road, and the whole roof has started to cave in just because of a tree over hanging it, im sure it will fall soon which means we should go an "tat" it - take things that can be reused.

There's not actually many pictures of the painting progress, there's some though - (just enough to make a post from!)

pic 306 We had to sand everything by hand and scrape of all the old flaky wood and all the old sealent from the paint (the paint really was superior, maybe it was meant for boats as it was almost like a latex rubber in the corners). We got white undercoat and had already decided that we will just do it all in black. Simple. You must check what colour undercoat you need for the colour paint you want it to be in the finish. Otherwise you will find that the colour wont stay the correct colour after you have painted it. I learnt this when I did a year with a father and son company in UK. We mostly used dark green as we were doing work for the national trust on old buildings, and we would use different shades of grey depending on the green for the undercoat. Here we could also use grey as it was to be finished in black, so we mixed some of the black with white undercoat to make our own.

Here's actually the only picture I have left from how the cabin looked before paint on the front (Above). This was when I had just got back with that window you see on the left and was ready to fit it. This is the old main entrance and how the doorway was changed to fit the window. You can see we were working from right to left (and in a stoners order, here there and everywhere) because I used a lot of Car Body Filler, which is a 2 part filler that you must mix together and it drys like metal on a car. Its perfect for repairing wood on large surfaces and on bigger patches as it sands easy and will obviously last "forever" and takes paint very well. There was a few leaks in the roof felt and more overhanging branches causing the Fascia (the white strip of wood on the end of the roof) to rot away. Here in the below pics you can see a the repair on the right side of the Fascia, this was the first attack on the outside repairs!

Here's the left side, it was much worse and I used THREE TUBS already of the filler, so it was left repaired but not with a nice finish.

The Front finished - I had  to leave the Fascia of the old porch as it was found, just for a laugh!

Lets go around the back - because we had fitted widows, the new wood needed first a priming coat and then an undercoat to "catch up" with the rest of the cabin.

This is the kitchen window as it was finished, looks nice and after paint it blends in nice, although I like the bare wood version better! Next you will see the only pics that are remaining of the paint job, but they are good pics at least..

Here's the side of the cabin (Below), where we have now the main entrance. I had just rebuilt the corner of the cabin and the new wall to the left side of the door, and (Right) it was just freshly undercoated whilst Cronus was sanding and scraping the last of the side part ready for undercoat.

This part (Below) you see that it is not there any more. This was the first part of the investigation into the extent of the floor damage when we started on the cabin. I didn't have many tools available and ended up causing more work for myself, of which I still haven't repaired yet! You see though how the door was finished from left to right, just another new piece of wood left to be fitted.

The side as it was finished - Cronus made a shower!

And that's all the photos remaining! You lucky people seeing something that you proberbly don't see everyday! Here's the links to the previous parts to the restoration project below, and soon I hope to re- organize the failed attempt of getting all my posts in link form in a list!

Disclaimer - If you are in financial poverty and unable to pay the rent, there are alternative solutions to having a place for living. You only need a safe place to sleep and to keep your things and it dosn't have to be like how everyone else does it. If you don't need to pay rent, then you no longer need to be constantly on the search for money, which means you no longer have to live in a city. There are many empty houses everywhere in the world, and in most places its not that much of an "offense" to walk into an open door, or climb through a broken window of an empty building and to sleep there (and to start make a home). You cause nobody harm. If you can repair the place and look after it then you will have good luck because you are doing good things!

There will be more posts from what im doing in the "not yet existing" garden and you then get to see more of the cabin. There are at least 3 standard things that need doing- to make a compost place, relocate the compost toilet and get a chainsaw to cut the trees laying around and do the fire wood.

Nice fix. Now you should get some solar panels in there unless Norwegian sun is crap.

I hear it's great for about a month 😂😂

hihi! Hey man :) 2 summers ago I came up with a bicycle from Germany and the sun was so hot from sweden in end of april that I couldnt ride the bike from 11am until 5 pm as it just burnt! Gotta go see for yaself how a place is :)

Hahaha I will come visit one day soon!

bring some chicas with you!

Hahaha I need to rebuild my harem but I am hoping for a solid start in Germany for sure. I'll keep you updated as to how that project is progressing

Well aslong as you got to Hmaburg or Belrin, it will be fun in Germany.. Where do you plant to go? Sprechs du deutsch shon?

My dear friend invited me to stay at her home in Berlin. But I want to see it all Chico. The world, and everything in it....and shit honestly one day space too. Haha

Yeh I should do but im keep buying silver or crypto whilest we got the electric from niegbours still.. I plan to go offer them money for a year to use electric, we dont use much as we have wood oven and just laptops, a tv for the laptops, and phones. And lights would be the same as a big Tv or 3, they leave the tv on 24 hours anyway we see it from up here lol

The sun here is very hot! Last year there was just a late summer, but this years there is summer as spring! 34c in the sun on hot days, i cant even cope! The siesta habit is a good habit to have even after years of being away from Spain :) I will show how good the sun is with the grow update that will occur most likely in the morning, I get midday sun until 5 pm, but of course the sun is still getting higher so son there shall be 7 hours of direct light :)
The clones i took from the plants before flowering are now set in them small shopping carts that you pull with one hand, around 60 liters and i got 6 with 2 clones in each, planning and already prepared to do a sea of green scrog in greenhouse, manual flowered mid July!

Epic!

(for Norway at least!)

I forgot to add that we have 12v lights running from a dumpstered car battery that we just charge up, and I really want to buy a pelton wheel, one form ebay all built in nice as there is so much water around!

Hey man! The place looks amazing. It's crazy what a little paint and sweat can do for a place no? Keep up the inspiring work homie!

yeh man thanks ! Its alot of physical work if you leave all that bullshit behind from a previous upbringing in society.. But you go to sleep tired, and you sleep good because you know that nobody will ask money from you for living in a place and that you dont have to got o work to be able to sleep somewhere. Chow rat-race! Norway is actually the first county I personally have open up squats, but it just happened like that and its the only way to have a place to sleep here. The tent in a forest is the other option, that was last year though :) onwards and upwards!

edit :I thought i would go see what your up to as i dont see anything - then I see im not even following you! I have lag here and if i upvote or follow etc I have to wait a few seconds for it to register

Haha no worries bro, Iam in Peru and would be willing to bet 1 sbd my lag is greater than yours 😂😂😂

yeh i bet your right! Silly thing is though that here sometimes its a bad as internet in west africa hahahaha

Great finish to a great project. Respect, not only for this renovation, but also for the care you took in taking us on your journey in word and visuals ... Thanks again for sharing your practical wisdom, @movingman! :-)
