Anarchist Quote - Jean-Jacques Rousseau
This is an incredibly famous quote by a modern individualist anarchist and is the opening line to his book on Rousseau's The Social Contract which not only summaries the entire philosophical system he sets out, but also shows how vitally important this quote and his philosophies are today.
Even though we have moved on considerable from where we were in 1762 when this book was written. Our freedoms are still constrained by the state, although elected it could be argued that they are still as forceful as a monarchy or other unelected systems. Because they do not give us an absence from the state, we do not hold a choice weather to have a state or be part of it. We are all in chains, even though we may not realize it, some of us would like these chains, some wouldn't. But neither side has a choice in the matter.
This quote demonstrates how we are naturally free, we do not have the need for a controlling state biologically built into us, but as soon as we enter the state as a registered citizen then we gain these chains. And in my opinion these chains are far too heavy!

Some people work 9 to 5 for 50 years doing something they don't enjoy. It was worse years ago when the average person worked for 60 hours a week. That's the chain that I couldn't put up with, I only wish I had used the bolt cutters sooner :)
