Anarchy Cannot Work

in #anarchy5 years ago

Anarchy is not a gradual transformation of governance, it is a complete change of paradigm. Instead of organisation via authority and centralisation, organisation arises in the absence of authority. In order to understand how such changes can manifest it is worth looking into history to find a similar situations.

The most similar change in human history, which is relatively small compared to anarchy, is the fall of the monarchies and the rise of large scale democracy. Authority was not abandoned, but from a fully centralised system it achieves some greater level of decentralisation.

Nevertheless the move towards democracy was revolutionary. From our perspective today it seems trivial, of course democracy works and, given correct principles, it can create more prosperity and more security than any monarchy. But back at the time this was not clear at all. Nobody has ever seen democracy. It was a mythical idea that worked in an ancient greek city of philosophers thousands years ago and thats basically it.

The King IS Order

Most people did not like the king and knew that monarchy has many serious flaws. But they still ended up supporting the king because they did believe that a society without top down authority would decent into chaos. Somebody has to guarantee safety and security and the necessary price for that is some level of corruption.

Thinking that the people will just decide to have laws and enforce them on their own was such a strange idea that few people did believe it could actually happen. Maybe in a small village where everyone knows each other, but in a country? Impossible. Surely democracy would bring chaos, bad decisions and foreign enemies would take advantage and invade.

When We Kill the King, He Will Just Be Replaced

The second thought that was common was the unavoidability of monarchy. When the King is dead, militias will fight for power and the winning faction will just establish the new Monarch. Not having an absolute ruler is an unstable system that cannot last. Someone will always end up on the top and create a system of power and authority.
The new king might be better or worse. So when your current king is not too bad better not revolt.

Anarchy

We see exactly the same arguments used against anarchy. Anarchy is a radical idea that exceeds the imagination of people. Nobody really knows how things would work out. It was never tested historically on large scales.

Therefore it is natural to repeat the old arguments used against democracy. There is no order without authority. Anarchy is chaos. Foreign powers will invade to take control. And anarchy cannot last. Rival factions will arise to reestablish authority. And if your current rulers do not suck too much it is not worth the risk.

But are these arguments actually correct? At least historically they did not do too well and humans are notoriously bad at understanding and predicting paradigm shifts.

Sort:

Well, as you said, "anarchy cannot work".

There is no path to, "lets just get rid of authority."

In all groups of people there is hierarchy.
In the family, it is usually the father.
Further, the family is run as a commune.

After that, even villages are run as a commune.

So, communism is easily found in group structures, but anarchy, not so much.

Anarchy really isn't found in nature.
What we might call anarchy is really free market capitalism.
Where two guys meet and exchange goods.

There is no incremental steps towards anarchy.

What we see is things like the DMV being replaced by robots. such as registering your car on the block-chain.

Over time we will probably see a lessening of coercive control as better and more efficient ways of people organizing are found.

Lastly, as people become more intelligent, they are more capable to govern themselves.

In the end, we may end up in something that looks like anarchy, but it won't be called anarchy.

Yes the anarchy we get is never called anarchy. But I am not so sure people are getting more intelligent, i think it is just technology moving forwards while humans remain where they are (until we get cyborgs and modifications of the human brain)

Instead of saying more intelligent, it may be better to say more wise.
We have entered the age of enlightenment... actually it is more we are leaving the age of endarkenment. Where everything we were taught in schools was wrong, and to make it more difficult to think.

So, as we get rid of all of these self-conflicting thoughts, we think clearer.

Sounds most accurate.

We have these technologies since less than 0.1% of our history.

Evolution cant be that fast.

Anarchy can work..in small groups. Right now the population is too big, no one has familiarity with each other so there is no trust. That is why authority and management exists.

And this is where blockchain can come in and provide scalable trust to replace a lot of the current authorities. Hopefully ..

Wow. What a clickbaity title.. :p

The more I informed myself about anarchy the more I realised that we already live in anarchy.

If you have a problem with someone you first try to clear it with that person directly if not working u take the help of friends of you both.
If this still doesnt work you call the police..
Only Spießer (german) call the police straight away.

Democracy and bureaucracy are just unnecessary load.

Of course without taxes there wouldnt be money to finance streets etc but also no money to finance wars.

I think it's against human rights to force taxes. If you are allowed to vote.
You should also be at least allowed to not pay taxes if ure unhappy with ur government.

Not paying taxes is the real vote against your government. In fact when government would be a service that is opt-in the taxes would just be fees that people are happy to pay for the service. But as of now the fees are mandatory and that obviously leads to a bad service because we have to pay regardless.

I am always amused when people wonder every time why public projects fail so miserably and consume absurd amounts of money. That is not a bug, it is a feature.

You say it.

We can have peace and true anarchy once a shift in consciousness comes along. That shift is for people to realize their divine right to rule over their own lives. Self, internal monarchy. If people followed natural laws and understood them, there would be no need for a King or fake mans law.

I fully agree and also have a hope about people waking up. But I am rather pessimistic on this point. Most likely the people will not wake up and continue doing what they have always done. We have to bring the change with new technology and ideas and then in 50 years the people that are already growing up in the new world will think that this is normal and has always been like this. The people that at this point are over 30 will not change.
