"Organic" Should Not Be A Label. Everything Else Should Be.steemCreated with Sketch.

Food is always on of my main New Year resolutions. It is kind of a big deal.

More people, if not most people these days realize that there is at least something to think about or consider when it comes to what we put in our bodies. There are a lot of reasons that it is so easy and cheap to buy processed factory farmed food, but I think the extra work or expense of buying good clean whole food is extremely valuable to society as a whole.

The health of our body and environment is probably the most obvious reason that comes to mind, but there are many other more difficult to discern reasons too.

Breaking the legal and financial strangle hold that factory farms enjoy will never be accomplished by begging the people they own to work against them and in our favor. The answer is in not giving them our money or support. Why not support your local farmer and co-op?

Lets think about $5 per dozen eggs.

At first glance, that does sound expensive. It only sounds expensive because it is relative to standard factory farm produced eggs. Lets look beyond the myriad of unseen expenses of putting food that was produced in such dubious conditions in our bodies and look at the actual burden of the "expensive" farm fresh eggs.

If we eat two eggs with something else for breakfast that only $0.50 per egg for a total of $1

Memes are not my own. They have been pulled from endless hours of scrolling Facebeef.

""Organic" Should Not Be A Label. Everything Else Should Be."

I like that, and so true. Organic is just kind of normal food, and "sprayed with X thing" seems actually what should be labeled.

Funny how it would be such a difference psychologically, even amongst people who already know what non-organic is. Like I'm sure I would buy organic way more often if the labels were like that lol

Some people think we need government to manage food labeling and certification, and that it wouldn't exist otherwise. Really it seems clear that they do a rather mediocre job and that there are things that would be improved by a market mechanism, that we just take for granted today.

@diggndeeper Thanks for the post. While I tend to agree with you, I am going to go out on a limb and say that I think people put too much value on labels and more on certifying bodies that make the regulations.

Does anyone have a feeling that the world 'organic' doesnt mean anything anymore? Organic frozen tv dinner? Organic asparagus, grown in brazil, irradiated in china, packaged in canada, and sold in New Jersey. Really???

Once Organic became a regulated set of rules, the big corporate powers hijacked the whole show, twisted the rules, and green washed their ecologically destructive practices. Now, we can cut down a primary growth, ancient rainforest and grow a handful of soy beans and still call them organic.

I am glad that there is no permaculture grown label. If there was, it would just be the same thing as bi box organic. The real deal is to tap into your local food culture, in your own neighborhood, know your farmers, and buy stuff without packaging!!!

Very good points. Government de-natures everything. Things always end up opposite of it's "original intention".

There is something about institutionalizing something that reduces it's value. I know this is different, but I remember when the AKC recognized Border Collies. Many fans of the breed fought against it. After the breed was recognized, the breed became standardized and much less of a working dog.

Exactly. I like the way you say it. Government and bureaucratic regulation de-natures everything...

I totally agree with "get to know your farmers!" The problem with that, though, is A LOT of farms and ranches end up specializing in a single product. See: Dairy Farm, Cattle Ranch, Apple Orchard, ect. They don't deviate from what works and that includes avoiding "farm to table" because they do what their daddy's taught them and that wasn't a thing they did. Straight to the commercial slaughter house from the ranch or straight to the supermarket distributor. When the farms and ranches start specializing, they start relying on the one product..and with that, comes major loss if something goes wrong like disease, bad weather...you know the drill.

Anyway, my point being that there are many places that just don't have small farms or ENOUGH small farms to feed people who are even remotely interested. A CSA membership or CoOp membership would be your best bet. Then you'll really know where your food comes from and whats on it!

Labels mean very little unless you know a lot about the label. Hey, I think I'll talk about this for my next blog post. Thanks..

people really underestimate the effects of food on us

Yeah, if they had to label all the additives and poisons that are on or in the so called food that would make a big difference.

Caution!! This product as been treated with Glyphosate!

Warning!! This packaging of this product will break down as estrogen in the human body!!

Not likely to happen sadly.

I'm glad I live in the south. I can get 36 farm eggs here for $3.

Thanks for the post.
Keep Steeming!

I hate our food production. All fruit and vegetables in the local shops and shopping malls are seemingly from one seller, harvested green to endure long transportation, treated with a rat poison and then served to us like the BEST BUY.
Put it together with the 40 year old frosted beef case and numerous animal products that go by... and you have exactly the situation you plotted above.
I have a feeling that the modern society is geared towards such a bad food in order to get rid of the older population, so when we end up our working years to drop dead as fast as we should from all these sodas and snacks, so that gov doesn't need to pay out our pensions and health case when we turn into an elderly citizens...

Except that the bad food plus medical advances cause the elderly populations to live out long periods with low quality of life, rather than extending the quality of life (with good nutrition) out to the same exact death age, or even living longer.
