Addressing The Left on Gun Violence - Think of the Children

in #anarchy6 years ago (edited)

If Trump's a fascist, why would you want him to have all the guns?

Nazis grabbed guns before loading people into trains!

Arm the teachers! What are you, a commie!?

The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun, is a good guy with a gun! We need more guns!

These are just some of the common talking points behind countless arguments and memes.
They're meant to be zingers and counter the left's own hysteria.

But to what end?

In such a heated debate, what good is hyperbole, but to draw out a increasingly nonsensical and emotional shit fest?

Comparing them to Nazis, Fascists, or Commies can be accurate in the right context, but what it fails to do is meet them at their level of understanding.

They do not believe they are Nazis. They do not believe they're trying to harm you, or limit your means of self-defense.

They're emotionally invested in ending the violence. And they are uneducated. They don't care that guns have no correlation to violence and crime, for better or worse. They don't care that it's physically, economically, logistically impossible to round up guns. They don't care that prohibition only empowers the criminal elements that would ignore the law anyway.

They care about their children. Their heart is in the right place. They're just sorely lacking perspective and unaware of the socioeconomic and social root to the violence.

They're just socialist drones right? So speak to their social awareness.

If we truly want to shift the debate toward something productive, focus on the solutions.

Focus on outreach. Focus on mental health and social influence. Focus on the family unit. Acknowledge their concern and take it a step further. Help them find solutions to the problem.

If you want them to leave guns alone, shift the conversation away from guns entirely.

All the gun-slinging bravado does is entice them to double down on their beliefs, and justifies their willingness to go after guns. Explaining the difference between a magazine and a clip falls on deaf ears. Showing off your gun collection makes you look like a psycho. This is not where their minds nor hearts are at and you're wasting your time trying to educate them on guns or the history of genocide. It's not their interest. Their children are, and they've been supported by a State verily invested in division, that speaks their language.

If you spend your time striking at the branches, and ignoring the root, you're simply pruning their tree and expanding their canopy.

Hear them out, and show them the better way. A little empathy goes a long way.

The answer to gun violence isn't guns. It's humanity.
