Property as Theft: The Libertarian Socialist Critique of Property (Summary/Anthology)steemCreated with Sketch.

Someone suggested that I put together an anthology of my posts on Property as Theft, so here it is, along with a brief summary of the contents of each post.

In Part 1, I discuss the definition of the terms “property” and “capitalism” and dive into the critique of property found in the writings of figures like Pierre-Joseph Proudhon, Karl Marx, Friedrich Engels, and Henry George. The general argument is that “property is theft” because it allows the proprietor/landlord/capitalist to live without having to work for a living by letting them exploit workers and live off of the labor of others. Legitimate ownership is based on the idea that a person is entitled to the product of their own labor. No one is entitled to the product of other peoples’ labor, nor are they entitled to exclusive use of natural resources for personal profit at the expense of the rest of humanity. Furthermore, capitalistic property allows banks to foreclose on homes that have already been partially paid for without reimbursing the mortgagor any portion of what they have paid.

In Part 2, I discuss Karl Marx’s idea of the primitive accumulation of capital and his notion of the anarchy of production, then I turn to Peter Kropotkin’s critique of Marx’s ideas and Kropotkin’s argument that capitalism is the negation of anarchism, and finally turn to the distinction between positive and negative liberty. I also discuss the arbitrary and statist nature of property rights under capitalism.

In Part 3, I discuss the various alternatives to capitalism and conventional private property as proposed by the three main schools of anarchism—mutualism, communism, and individualism—and the related libertarian socialist ideology of Georgism.

Then, in the Sequel to the series, I give a few brief closing remarks. These few paragraphs are separate from the main part of the series only because I came up against the size limitation for posts on Steemit. In this final post, I discuss my own personal views.

Here's an updated/revised version of the final post. I can't edit the existing posts due to Steemit limitations, so here's a link:
