Jallianwala Bagh History lives here

In 1919, General Dyer fired into a crowd of peaceful protesters who had gathered for a demonstration at Jallianwala Bagh, Amritsar. With closed gates and indiscriminate firing, people had nowhere to flee. Some jumped into a well (Martyr's Well, pictured here) but General Dyer's army shot them too. Over 1650 shots were fired, the bullet holes remain till this day. This was the gravest mass shooting in British India with more than a 1000 allegedly dead and more than 1500 injured. Criticism was swift and from around the world. Rabindranath Tagore renounced his Knighthood in protest. Today, this tragic place has become a popular picnic spot for families.
