Diary of Altruism from the land of callous minds
My name is Altruism. I am living around and among you.Do you remember me?If not..
My presence was there when your mother gave birth to you.
I acted through your parents when they brought you up to make you what you are today.
I have been there whenever you got a succour in need.
Recently I got to know that the English speaking world had honored me conferring a meaning to my name in their dictionary.
Altruism-disinterested and selfless concern for the well being of others
I was stupified to see that the meaning they gave aptly suits the the way of my life!
Yes,I'm exactly what the word 'Altruism' means.But I am a parasite..do you know how?
I can never directly act by myself.I need the help of conscience which is with you, the so called human beings.Your conscience should give me the permission to perform actions.
As I said earlier,I am omnipresent.
But I'm so much worried to the deep that,nowadays,I'm forced to remain mere a spectator..I am hapless and helpless!
The decrease in the number of homo sapiens who give consent for me to act,really depresses me to the core!
Let me recall one such callous incident happened recently in 'God's own country',Kerala.
A man fell down from a multi-storeyed building in Kochi,a city located in kerala.
I sensed the danger and hurried up to the spot.It was a crowded junction well known for its never ending traffic congestion..There were scores of human beings standing and walking here and there..They were shooting there gaze at this man just to remain mere spectators..
I wanted to act asap.
I scanned the consciences of all those standing there..I couldn't even find a single heart that possessed an empathy towards a co-human struggling for life! All these happenings were getting recorded in a camera..It became a sensational news on TV channels that evening.
Time went by.Something had to be done immediately.. The clock as usual never waits for us.All three needles seemed to be in competition with Usain Bolt.
5minutes had gone..then 10 minutes..then 15 minutes..!!
I was completely disappointed..All that I needed at that very moment was a heart possessing conscience..I thoroughly investigated,But in vain!
I had almost came to the conclusion that one more life is going to wither from this lovely world owing to my helplessness to act in time!
Suddenly I could feel something positive.Yes,finally I found one heart out of hundreds!
It seemed as if it was angel..A woman appeared from somewhere with a strong determination to save that inching-to- death life..She yelled at everyone..stopped the vehicles..Many refused to give a helping hand..After some minutes of struggle she managed to get a car to transport this wretched man to hospital..!
Me,yes the Altruism,smiled a rare!
She sent a strong message to those of us whose mind is harder than rock..Callous,Numb.
