What is GridCoin?
GridCoin is a math based cryptocurrency. It's main use is renting out computing power on the BOINC platform. The BOINC network is made up of over half a million active users and the computing power is primarily used for scientific research. For a great explanation of how BOINC works click here.
There are two ways to earn GridCoin. You can earn through Proof of Stake (POS), which is just letting your coins sit in an open wallet and gaining interest to the tune of 1.5% APR. You can also join the data crunching, either through solo crunching or pool crunching, to earn GRC. This crunching is called Proof of BOINC (POB). To maximize returns you can combine data crunching with Proof of Stake. These are tied together with Distributed Proof of Research (DPOR).
There are also a few cool features with GridCoin. The wallet has decentralized voting built in. They have created a BOINC whitelist, which is a list of projects on the BOINC platform that currently are needing computing power. And of course the kicker, when you use GridCoin you are helping to advance science using the BOINC network.
The potential future for GridCoin and the BOINC network could be great. In addition to scientific and for-profit computation, it also hosts the possibility of shared storage.

Missed the giveaway deadline! In all the POS coins I've used, I like this one the best. The addition of the magnitude also impacts your earning while you perform work. For someone with an average computer, this is a great coin, not to mention science driven.
I haven't even downloaded the wallet yet but I will continue to add GRC just because BOINC is actually useful to people, it's not just speculation.
It's a little complex to set up because you need to have the BOINC manager as well as the GRC wallet for total functionality, then you have to join the individual projects you want to research for on team gridcoin.
