The Alphabet Art Challenge - Day fifteen- 'O' for Oxygen
Each month, for an hour, channelling my inner Michael Jackson, I take my ease in this Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Chamber.
Why do I do this? Well, read on!
In a HBOT chamber, the air pressure is increased to three times higher than normal, allowing your lungs to gather more oxygen than would be possible breathing pure oxygen at normal air pressure. This leads to oxygen being distributed quickly throughout the body, thus promoting healing.
A study at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in 2013 showed that a course of hyperbaric oxygen treatment triggers an eight-fold increase in the number of circulating stem cells, which are crucial to injury repair. HBOT is used by many of those participating in high-risk sports. In fact almost every major soccer club in Britain has an oxygen chamber.
So, we all need Oxygen. But does the body benefit from a little more of what’s good for it?
If you ask mainstream medicine, well, not so much.
In mainstream medicine HBOT is used almost exclusively for treating thermal burns, decompression sickness, carbon monoxide poisoning and non-healing wounds, but it has been shown in many studies to have a far more expansive therapeutic role way beyond this.
Recent research has demonstrated the efficacy of HBOT for traumatic brain injury, even when administered years after injury,*and, there have been encouraging results treating children with Autism.
Children with autism who received hyperbaric treatment for 40 hourly sessions had significant improvements in overall functioning, receptive language, social interaction, eye contact, and sensory/cognitive awareness compared to children who received slightly pressurized room air.**
And, something your doctor won’t tell you; both recent and older research studies have shown that HBO can be inhibitory and reduce cancer growth in some cancer types, such as breast cancer. *** A 2016 study concluded that ‘the administration of HBO can provide many clinical benefits in the treatment of tumors’****
Now what do you think could possibly be keeping this benign therapy from being widely adopted, despite the lack of viable alternatives?

Myself, I just like to lie for that uninterrupted hour, with little external stimulation other than the gentle hum of the motor and then, to burst forth, (free) running, Parkour style, to leap gracefully, effortlessly, into the waiting taxi.

The Oxygen therapy is amazing for overall health. Find it amazing for cycling and not being out of breath.
So where could you find one of these to try it out?
I was lucky enough to find one in Dublin by Googling.
