What the Dutch Do on Kingsday
Perhaps the Dutch are crazy after all.
Once a year, on Kingsday (yes, the Netherlands has a King, he's called Willem-Alexander), everybody dresses up with something orange, and puts out their old stuff on the street, trying to earn a few bucks hoping that someone else will enjoy that book they will never ever want to read again, or play with that toy that is almost broken but still kind-of functioning.
Boardgames!
Like a good Dutch person, I also put on some orange clothes and I wandered around some of these free fleamarkets. Mostly I'm interested in board games, but was also on the look-out for weird puzzles of 1000+ pieces for my sister.
Every year when I'm in the Netherlands at 27th of April, I try to add some new items to my collection of board games. And this year again, I was successful! I spend something like 4 SBD in total (present market value).
This year I was successful again. Some good games and some interesting-looking games. A good mix.
Ow, and that spongebob squarepants game is for my sister, obviously. She likes weird games ;-)
But these pictures might look like as if it is a simple and easy thing, to stroll along a Kingsday-market... it is not. It is crazy. So many people. So I tried to take some pictures to show you want Dutch madness looks like!
Types of junk
People!!
And of course many bikes everywhere because people need to carry all their goodies home as well...
It was nice. And I hope to see you all at Kingsday in the Netherlands next year!
You're very welcome to buy all our junk!
Leuke foto's en verslaggeving! Het ziet er gezellig uit! X
Really loved all your photos of the interesting street life and markets on "Kings Day" I love secondhand stalls, myself! @nobyeni
What a wonderful cultural and history lesson! And great pictures.
Roll-it is a great game. Not sure I ever won, but still fun to play. My favorite game would be Halma, although I hardly ever win that game either :)
What is your favorite boardgame?
Is that top one Rummikub ... a tile based rummy game wher eyou can rearrange the pieces? It's a family favorite in the US. Always try to manage a game or two with my grandmother if I get time when visiting.
