E175 (Pt1) Beyond Bitcoin - PeerPlays, BlockPay, Jewels, and SteemQ!

Covered this Hangout

# 1 w/ $132.28 -- @Peerplays

Jonathon Bahai of Peerplays says "It's alive!" regarding the new testnet. He also reminds everyone they can now check the number of tokens they will receive via the bitshares sharedrop. Check out your peerplay sharedrop amount at peerplays.tech.

Michael Maloney gives details on the snapshot and explains why results on the estimates of sharedrops on BitShares holders may be very slightly higher than the quotes received. So if you receive 1% or so less than your quoted amount it is ok and attributed to the fact that some accounts have not quite been added to the pool receiving payouts. He also lets everyone know that early days of the testnet will have very few features, but will continue adding on. Informs us that there will be a weekly written update on the Peerplays news site where these updates will be given. Keep up with these written news articles and these hangouts to find out which features are going to be added!
One final note: ebay type features will now be available for peerplays and, in the future, potentially all of graphene!

Check out the Peerplays Homepage for more info on Peerplays including how to join the testnet!

#2 w/ $8.47 @chris4210 of Blockpay

Blockpay's Bits & Pretzels afterparty was a success--attendees paid BTC and Dash for gummybears! Chris goes over some of the attendees they met and other blockchain startups and services in the space. He also talks about the new locations where blockpay will be accepted around the world.
After BitShares Munich empowered the Oktoberfest Beer Garden, they spoke with individuals who work in blockchain technology. Chris expressed that users became interested in the speed and ability to accept cryptocurrencies for free. Those with whom they spoke had an appreciation for bitshares technology and how it makes it possible to purchase with any of your favorite cryptos--all because of bitshares! As always, Chris4210 takes questions from the community.
Including one about what it was like hanging with Kevin Spacey...

Don't forget you can find the blockpay app at the google play store or on the blockpay website.

#3 w/ $3.41 -- @pro4never

@Pro4never (aka Chris Cook) w/ the Jewels project announces official launch of conquerheroes! Want to Play Conquer Heroes and stress test it? Do so at the Downloads Page. Jewels integration is now complete: Deposit, Purchase through exchanges w/ bitcoin, Purchase with Paypal!
He also gives details regarding "immature" coins that are purchased through paypal, stating that there is a 45 day period of time when chargebacks for jewels can be pushed onto the sellers, so jewels purchased with paypal will need to "mature" to the point where the chargeback window is closed before you can send your jewels to exchanges to be traded.
Chris lets describes Proof of Stake and how Jewels as a Proof of Stake coin can be "minted" by holding your tokens in the wallet and "locking them" away in a process called "staking", wherein a user can stake his/her coins to mint new coins directly into their wallet. To those who are unfamiliar with this process, it is like earning free tokens just for holding jewels longterm!
Roy Khan talks about how Jewels project plans to deal with the inflation of supply for various in-game items and discusses with fuzzy the mechanisms behind how individuals from the community can earn jewels through the creation of their own items. Details the benefits of blockchains in gaming marketplaces with special focus on the Jewels projects games, where items and content can be bought and sold for jewels.

Remember you can currently buy Jewels off exchanges Yobit and Alcurex Exchanges.

#4 w/ $3.26 @furion of SteemQ

@furion joins us to inform listeners of SteemQ - A Decentralized Video Platform for STEEM

"The project is starting to take shape in what it is trying to achieve and how it is going to achieve that."~Furion

The core hypothesis is that there is a demand for a decentralized platform for displaying user generated content--much like Youtube in its early days, but with a level of decentralization of control.
This platform will be on top of steem in its first version with steem and steemdollars being the payment of choice above bitcoin. @furion cites the ease with which people can enter the system and begin using cryptocurrencies for the service without first having to purchase bitcoin. He sees this as a huge advantage for user acquisition outside of crypto (note: This demographic is also what cryptocurrency advocates call "the masses".)
SteemQ is currently looking at two models for hosting:

  1. Webtorrents
  2. A distributed network of IPFS nodes
The project is currently using IPFS to prove content exists and provide a mechanism for discovery, but video hosting is still a question under consideration.
The community discusses alternatives that have worked in the past and those that haven't. This is a tough nut to crack but one worth the Steem community discussing. Join in the discussion on steemit.chat room #steemq.

Very cool, I'm excited about SteemQ!

Great news about Jewels :)

Remember you can currently buy Jewels off exchanges Yobit and Alcurex Exchanges.

You can also buy them through paypal! But its still cheaper on the exchanges I think :)

Already went ahead and tried Conquer Heroes, just took a screenshot of me power grinding :P think I'm around level 70

Its pretty fun so far! I like the updates, made it a bit easier to follow the quests as I got stuck on that in Apex. Not played it more than a couple hours yet so it might also just be me :P
