If Sweden and Germany Became US States, They Would be Among the Poorest States

in #news7 years ago (edited)

The battle over the assumed success of European socialism continues. Many European countries like Sweden have gained a reputation as being very wealthy in spite of their highly regulated and taxed economies. From there, many assume that the rest of Europe is more or less similar, even if slightly poorer. But if we look more closely at the data, a very different picture emerges, and we find that the median household in the US is better off (income-wise) than the median household in all but three European countries. Proponents of big government and socialism like to point to Europe as a system that works while removing freedom from the people.

As someone who has lived in Europe for years and traveled a bit there I was always so confused by this.

Don't get me wrong. I love a lot of Europe. But the standard of living I saw for their middle class always seemed so much lower than the American middle class.

Turns out, it is. If you were to make the majority of European countries states in the U.S. they would be amongst the most poor if not the poorest.

What do you think?

Sort:

Yup. Like most norwegians brag about being so rich, because we're told we're rich. But most middle class people live in small barracks and houses that looks like trailer homes. We drive shitty expensive cars compared to the US and all our money goes to taxation and fees. Yaaay, we're so rich because we have $1 million dollar each in the oil fund (which is invested on the stock market and could potentially be gone tomorrow) Our elders are not getting help, and almost no one gets a nursery home place, but their kids have to take care of them in their home until they die. Our schools suck and no one have pride in their jobs unless theyre engineers or doctors.

It makes sense. But then again, there is a MASSIVE middle class in the US compared to that of Europe. Or am I wrong?

We do have a massive middle class. It's shrinking due to, I believe, the same higher taxes and larger government that caused European middle classes to shrink.

@Libertylol I have always wondered of the same. In my experience and with the same skill set I made it out better in the USA. For me Europe has been a place to spend rather than make money but all said and done I still love most of it.

I absolutely love it. My favorites are probably Valletta, Malta and Rome, Italy!

I heard Alan Watt say that when he grew up in the UK, he noticed when he was young that people never progressed and further than where they were. No matter how hard they worked. The nobility stayed where they were and the working class stayed where they were. The common folk were renters and never became owners. Recently I heard Denesh D'souza say that in America the merchant is the top of the society. Not the nobility or priesthood. That means the common person can work to better themselves and actually have hope of achieving. Also common people can own real estate.

Dont upset the progressives with your article, Brad Pitt told me "socialism is fine". Everybody points to sweden because they dont want to look at Venezuela. By there is more going on that meets the eye, like high suicide and use if anti depressants

Wow, i mean you have to literally focus on making mistakes to mess things up to such a point where you are poorer than Alabama...
