RIP Ángel Nieto
Ángel Nieto Roldán (January 25, 1947 - August 3, 2017) is a professional Spanish Grand Prix motorcycle racer. He is one of the most experienced motor racers in sports history, winning 13 World Championships and 90 Grand Prix wins in a racing career spanning twenty-three years from 1964 to 1986. In total 90 Grand Prix victories ranks third only to those by Giacomo Agostini , And 115 for Valentino Rossi.
Nieto specializes in small displacement cycling races like in the 50 cc, 80cc and 125cc classes but many other racers, including former world champion Barry Sheene, regard it as the greatest motor racer of all time. [1] Although he was never successful at world level in larger displacements, he won the Spanish National Championship in class 50 cc, 125 cc, 250 cc, 500 cc and 750 cc. [1] He retired in 1986 at age 39 with a total of 90 Grand Prix wins and 13 World Championships. Known superstition, he preferred to call his championship count as "12 + 1".
Then he operates a Grand Prix motor racing team with two racers - his son, Ángel Nieto Jr. And Emilio Alzamora, who won the 125cc title. He commented on the Grand Prix race for Spanish television. There is the Nieto Ángel museum in Madrid which features several trophies and racing memorabilia. FIM named it the "Legend" Grand Prix in 2000. Nieto attended the 2008 French Grand Prix at the Le Mans Bugatti Circuit on May 18, 2008, dressed up with a special shirt that congratulated Valentino Rossi to equal Nieto's 90 victories. Nieto drives Rossi's MOTOR, and Rossi as a passenger holds the flags with a high "90 + 90", as they make a victory round.
