3 Cities With Crazy Sounding Names And Crazy History Behind Them!

You might find it funny if I tell you that some cities' names are crazy enough. Actually, when I first researched about this subject, I couldn't stop smiling when I assumed some supposed conversation of how the residents of those cities would reply to some questions of foreigners because the names of those cities are funny enough. If a foreigner do not know that it is the name of city, then he might start laughing at replies of residents of those cities.

The major part of the story do not only depend on names which sound crazy although names are the part of story too but the major part is how they were named in even more crazier ways. You might get some laugh while reading, so make sure to get ready for some laugh. Ready? Lets move forward now.

Nome - City In Alaska:

Nome is one of the largest and most important cities of Alaska. Nome is the home of sled dog racing. But do you think that Nome was always called "Nome"? Do you know some crazy history behind that city name? If not, then read below.

In the early 1800s, one of the draftsman was looking over the charts, analyzing the charts and suddenly he saw that one peninsulas is not yet named. He decided to give that unnamed peninsulas a name but he was dumb enough to not think of any creative name. Instead, he wrote the notation on chart and labelled it "Name".

In 1853, the chart was handed to British Navy. They weren't able to read the handwriting of draftsman which resulted in transciption error and they started to call it "Nome". And then what? The error is still stuck and most people are not aware of the history. The current name of the city of Alaska is the result of transciption error otherwise it would stay "Name". Those who know the history might be thanking to bad handwriting of draftsman which actually saved the city from getting a strange and crazy name.

Accident - City in Maryland!

To be honest, the name of city sounds awkward and crazy. I couldn't stop laughing when I assumed some supposed conversation between a foreigner as I mentioned in the beginning too. I will write that supposed conversation which could make you laugh like me too. But before we do, lets get to know how the city was named "Accident".

After the revolutionary war, Mr George Deakins was owed to receive 600 acres of land to cover the payment of a debt from England's king George. He wanted to get some awesome areas, and to measure which area is more great than others, George Deakins sent two uncompetant engineers to select the best area. Both of them did their best to survey the best part of Maryland.

Both engineers were searching for the best piece of land and when they returned, they found that both of them selected the same Oak tree as their starting and returning point as an accident. They tried to survey more places but they considered the starting point as gigantic piece of land and were continuously getting to same area even after lots of surveys as an Accident. George Deakins decided to take that area as a payment of his debt and patented it "The Accident Track".

Accident was the name taken first by engineers and the name stuck. From that day till now, the city is still called "Accident".

So, I was wondering what would the resident of town "Accident" reply if I ask him where do he live? He will certainly say, "I live in Accident, Maryland". Doesn't it sounds like a crazy answser? OR just imagine if someone says to you "I am going to accident", you might end up scratching your head for few seconds on what he just said. But that's only if you don't know the reality that it is actually the name of the city of Maryland.

Flin Flon - City in Manitoba:

Flin Flon is the city of Manitoba which is a canadian province. But if we go back to 100 years in history, we would find nothing because there was nothing until miner Tom Creighton came there and found a weathered book from nowhere. It was the book of novel "The Sunless City" by J.E. Preston-Muddock. The novel was written about a professor named Josiah Flintabbatey Flonatin who discovered a long lost mine.

Creighton decided to read the book but when he reached to the ending part, he found that last few pages were missing, he was curious about how the novel ended. Then Tom spotted a great amount of ore which was sticked out of the side of a hill. Creighton wondered, looked at it and instantly said this was the mine of Flin Flon.

Since that time, the name of that city in Manitoba is stuck at Flin Flon till now, in honor of a fictional character. It sounds crazy enough that from 1915 till today, no one attempted to change the name, but well, there is no big need of changing the name.

So, these were some crazy history behind those crazy names of city. I thought to write about some crazy stuff today and I really hope that you enjoyed reading it. If someone on steemit is from any of those cities, then be assured that I didn't mean to offend anyone. Those histories were interesting and crazy enough. cool buddy @jacor. Keep posting the good work.

I love Flin Flon and Nome cities but not Accident due to his name;-)

This is interesting read. I never know some much history about Nome. Seems like @jacor has the potential to be an interesting historian who can do well with story telling.

Accident :D lol
but this is normal, compared to villages in Russia. How about "Suchkino" (Bitches) or "Herota" (Bullshit)
