”My stomach is sore and bloated after food.”

You know how you just can’t eat when stressed out? This is due to your body shutting down digestion so you are light to escape and deal with perceived danger.

However, this low stomach acid can translate to feeling overly full and bloated after a meal, indigestion, seeing food particles in your poop, bad breath and nutritional malabsorption.

Leaky gut can affect:

  1. Estrogen Dominance - A leaky gut does not effectively escort the aggressive estrogen metabolites out of your body. Instead, they stay in circulation.

  2. Estrobolome: a subset of bacteria in the gut that helps to metabolize estrogens and disarm the harmful estrogen that cause cancers in the thyroid, breast, ovaries and uterus.

  3. Thyroid: part of your conversion of T4 thyroid hormone into the stronger, more active T3 form, occurs in your gut – but may be compromised if your gut is unhealthy. Women who take Synthroid, the synthetic version of the T4 hormone, and who have digestive issues often don’t convert well to T3 which is the bioactive form of the thyroid hormone. That explains why in spite of taking the drug, they are still struggling with low thyroid symptoms.

  4. Sleep and mood: 80-90% of serotonin (your happiness hormone) and melatonin (which enhances sleep and is produced from serotonin, in total darkness) are made in your gut but that production can go haywire due to a leaky gut.

  5. Appetite hormones: An inflamed, unhealthy gut promotes unhealthy bacteria that can change your levels of ghrelin (hormone that makes you feel hungry) and leptin (hormone that signals when you’re full). It can also impact on the food you crave and your taste receptors.

  6. Cortisol: A leaky, inflamed gut may also make your stress response more easily triggered. Constant stress also inhibits your stomach from digesting food properly.
