Daily Field Notes #108

in #geopolis7 years ago

Welcome to the 108th Daily Field Note! Here you find the top post of the day, one covering each scientific field that is included by Geopolis. Since these authors put a lot of effort in writing a good post they surely deserve the extra exposure.

Geopolis is a project to promote and connect authors who write in the fields of global sciences. You can read more about the project and how to join here:

Geology: The Impending Demise of the Terrestrial Planets

Original post by @agbona

Our solar system is made up a Sun, eight planets, as well as rocks, dust, gas, dark matter and other stuff probably haven't crossed our consciousness yet. In my previous post where I wrote about the Andromeda galaxy, how big it is in size in comparison to our host galaxy - The Milky Way. Although, when I was comparing both galaxies, I made our solar system seem quite a little, well, in reality, our solar system is really enormous. So far, only one spacecraft known as the Voyager-1 has ever flown from our planet - the Earth, all the way to the edge of the solar system. And it took the Voyager-1 35 years to complete this task.

Ecology: Scientists have a new tool to identified species; by sequencing environmental DNA (eDNA) to find all the species that lives in the environment

Original post by @valth

I want to use today's post to write a bit about a new tool that could potentially be one of the best tools available to both ecologists and conservationists. As you probably know from the title, the things we are going to be looking closer at is called Environmental DNA, from here on shortened to eDNA. Whenever an organism interact with the environment, it does shed some DNA in one form or another. It can be in saliva, blood or other fluids, but the most common source for mammals is skin that is shed. You can find your own DNA in pretty much all the areas you spend some time, and getting rid of all of it can be a huge task.

History: Mesoamerican People - Chapter Four: Early Maya

Original post by @maxjoy

As we have seen before the Olmec';s where a huge influence in all of the Mesoamerican peoples. As their great city of La Venta was abandoned at 400 B.C., the cities that were influenced by it, of the high land and Pacific slopes to the south where still operational. And this is considered the birth of the Mayan Civilisation.

One of these first Mayan cities was 'Takalik Alaj' a very large city with two ball courts and 350 monuments in general.
