For all those who are excited about the eclipse, this is some real great news and if you happen to be a US resident (Florida), it is a MUST READ for you. Below you will find all useful information about the safety tips, precautions, places to visit to witness the eclipse and the ways to enjoy the eclipse even if you just choose to sit on your computer at the comfort of your home.
The Great American Eclipse will happen Monday, August 21 at approximately 1:30 p.m. with peak coverage around 3 p.m. In Florida, there will be a partial solar eclipse. You all are encouraged to take the necessary precautions to observe the eclipse safely.
Looking directly at the sun any time before or during the eclipse without the proper eye protection can cause serious and permanent damage to your eyes.
Sunglasses will not offer your eyes enough protection from the sun’s rays. Only use glasses with special solar filters that are designed for solar eclipses and that meet the ISO 12312-2 safety standard. For a list of authorized eclipse glasses, please go to this link https://eclipse.aas.org/resources/solar-filters. Please also do not view the eclipse using a camera, telescope or binoculars.
There is a good news for those who live in/near Miami. For a safe viewing experience, FIU’s Stocker AstroScience Center is hosting a solar eclipse watch party from noon to 3 p.m. The FIU community and public is invited to attend. FIU astronomy faculty will explain the eclipse and a limited number of NASA-approved eclipse viewing glasses will be available.
In addition, researchers from the College of Engineering & Computing will host a live-stream event on Facebook beginning at 2:55 p.m. To watch it, please go to this link https://www.facebook.com/pg/FIUEngineeringAndComputing/posts/?ref=page_internal
