Why is Africa sloppy in tech?
Lack of investment and lack of transfer of knowledge. Projects are implemented in a way that leads to a dependency on foreign tech and foreign human support, it's just about keeping a constant flow of capital to the foreign companies the implement them.
then Africa does utilise the latest gadgets and software.
With regards to agriculture I'm glad we are not extensively experimenting with GMO's and animal hormones like first world countries.
Regarding energy, thankfully we are backwards and we have not embraced nuclear power. Slowly most of the energy will be green.
There is still a long way to go with recycling, however, most countries are embracing it and doing away with plastic so we don't end up with our own ’Pacific Garbage Patch’.
not many people here are adventurers.
I never get to understand why not many people here are interested in exploring new ways of doing things, and designing solutions to problems. We always tend to just live life as it presents itself. And as the saying goes; Its not easy to grow without adventure.
Second, many people live in despair.
It's interesting how many people believe that their input can hardly do anything to solve the problems their country faces. As a result, they tend to only worry about themselves and their families. They hardly worry about the nation to the extent of even stealing public resources without caring of the consequences.
So "I'm just gonna go to college, find a nice job and take care of my kids, because our government's corrupt" they say. And this leaves you wondering, who's gonna fix the corruption if everyone keeps thier tail between the legs. Its wrong to just assume nothing can be done. A little input goes a long way. Like for instance, if you wont help solve it, dont help it.
Third, Unity of purpose
The highly ethnically diversified Africa needs leaders with very high levels of wisdom and integrity, to be able to bring people together to enable them work together for the common good of their nations.
For as long as people cannot work together, its always very difficult to make much needed progress.
I always believe the President of a country is best suited to play this role.
Finally, not many people are willing to make substantial sacrifices for the sake of future generations
"If I do not see the results soon enough, then why bother?". The truth is, this lack of investing in the long term ends up prolonging problems for generations. Our ability to take risks now ultimately will affect how future generations of Africans live tomorrow.
Take for instance South Korea.
In 1953, the per capita GNP of South Korea was just about $67. The Korean war of 1950 was so bad that the then Head of UN special delegation , Mr. Vengalil Menom was quoted as saying;
"How can a rose blossom from a garbage dump?"
And another quote from Douglas MacArthur- "This country has no future. This country will not be restored even after a hundred years".
South Koreans would literally fight over aid food. But the people were patient, sacrificed heavily, sent their kids to school and the kids honoured them by studying dilligently. They walked for miles to get to school. As a result, they ended up raising a much needed, well trained workforce just at the right time.
In 1960, the South Koreans laid out a plan to help power up their economy, and attract foreign investment. A few years later, the first phase of the plan was initiated. They started to build a steel mill, which was largely critisized by the US and other western countries, as it required massive investment and hi-tech, which they never seemed to posses at that time.
But despite all those challenges, the Koreans ultimately started to produce steel. Now South Korea is the biggest ship builder on earth. They also produce lots of electronics.
This kind of unity and the few factors stated above made the difference between the world's poorest economy and the 12th strongest economy on earth today in just five decades.
So I strongly believe that if these issues are addressed, and people work honestly and dilligently, Africa will grow as strong as she should be.
