Yes, in some cases that are models, and if not there are other (non-alien) explanations. For example the very small skeleton was a human with some mutations:

For example Kyshtym dwarf wasn't human. The creature was not by any means a human being. The human skull consists of six bones. The skull of that creature was made up of 4 bones. There were other differences in the skeleton structure.
