UN Special Envoy's Visit Turned Useless for Rohingya
Akyab: Christine Schraner Burgener, the United Nations (UN) Special Envoy for Burma (Myanmar), visited the Sakkifara (Thet Key Pyin) Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp in the capital city, Akyab (Sittwe) of Arakan (Rakhine) State, on 17th June 2018.
Her visit started at 3:17 pm at Sakkifara (Thet Key Pyin) IDP camp, which ended about 4:05 pm in the evening.
In her meeting period with Rohingya until 3:50 pm, she did not utter the word “Rohingya” even once. Instead, she insisted Rohingya to accept the illegal National Verification Card (NVC), by saying, it’s the first step towards the citizenship process in Burma (Myanmar).

Later, after requests from locals, for just about 15 minutes, Rohingya were able to explain her the actual situation that have been going on. In the limited time and watch of the Burmese officials, Rohingya could not fully explain the actual situation, due to the security concerns as well.
According to locals observations and her first visit in Rohingya IDP camps, Rohingya strongly feel that she is not fully known to the Rohingya Genocide or she must be manipulated by the bias Burmese officials.
Moreover, a Burmese official sitting beside her was misinterpreting the Rohingya’s answers, which was asked by the UN special envoy.

“This type of misinterpretation was done intentionally to misquote the Rohingya’s plight to the newly deployed envoy and we believe she is not fully known to our genocide that have been going on since decades” explains a Rohingya, who asked not to be named.
Earlier UN special envoy to Burma, Ms. Yanghee Lee was strongly criticized by the Burmese gov’t, for exposing the truth of the ongoing genocide to the whole world.

The UN Special Envoy for Burma (Myanmar) is on her first trip to Myanmar and visiting Arakan (Rakhine) State from 17 to 18 June. Christine Schraner Burgener will make a visit to Bangladesh-Myanmar border area, where the repatriation process for thousands of Rohingya refugees, who fled a state sponsored army crackdown last year in Burma (Myanmar) will take place.
