How Airsoft Works

The gold standard for competitive play is still the electric model, also known as the AEG (automatic electric gun).

AEGs use battery packs to power an electric firing mechanism that can fire pellets at rates as high as 900 rounds per minute, making them the best option when you need rapid firing options.

The whole process requires an electric motor to turn a series of three gears inside a gearbox, allowing for incredible power and accuracy.

There is one more model, though it’s still very new and not very popular yet. The hybrid model uses explosive caps to propel pellets much like a real gun, making these the most powerful airsoft guns available. This does bring up the question of whether it’s really the point to make them closer to the real thing, but that’s a debate for elsewhere.

The last bit of info regards the Hop-Up system added in most airsoft guns. “High Operation Power Up,” or Hop-Up, is a small rubber node stuck in the barrel of the gun that gives the pellets backspin, causing them to travel in an upward trajectory and resist gravity.

This allows the pellets to fly further than otherwise. Adjusting where in the barrel the Hop-Up is placed will greatly affect the range of your shots, so adjust accordingly. Airsoft is only growing in popularity, so while these may be the only models currently available, there’s no telling what could be right around the corner.
