SOLVING ADDICTION -PART 2
Your recovery might be going great and feeling pretty excited when all of a sudden you're faced with a huge life challenge and since your only way of dealing with life problems is taking drugs or alcohol eventually you resort to that way.
It's a natural trait that we want to avoid pain and attach ourselves to pleasurable objects. So people who have been in pain tend to crowd out whatever painful feelings they have had, or are having, by seeking pleasure in some form. Pleasure is rewarding because it does actually work; it does displace pain and reduce stress.
We certainly live in a society which goes to great lengths to avoid pain, in the form of grief. We've got pill for everything -we have an idea that we can get rid of any sort of trouble with drugs. Many people with longer histories of abuse have become so used to solving addictions with drugs or alcohol that they no longer have any other thing to fall back on.
In case you think addiction is only a condition that only smokers and junkies(drug addicts) are faced with, then you're missing out, as there is growing acceptance that behavior can be just as addictive as drugs and that behavior is much more prevalent than substance addiction.
Before you start with finding skills to improve your problem solving, it is of great importance to consider this fact "everyone has problem"
THE SOLVING PROCESS
Self acceptance: accept that you have a problem, often times people are scared to admit they have a problem or probably feel depressed or a feeling that they can't handle some aspect of their life.
Define the problem: think about the particular problem you are faced with and decide what you seek to achieve at the end.
Think on possible solutions: think outside the box, find out what best skills to employ, ask people, friends who have faced the same problem and discover how they were able to solve it or getting advice on what you should do in that situation.
Think on the consequences of your solution : check if your solution to the problem is either positive or negative with a short time effect or positive or negative with a long time effect.
Choose a course of action : out of the different plan you've highlighted down or pen down, find out which one best suites and solve the imminent problem.
Execute your decision : having choose the right course, immediately implement the decisions you've made to be certain if the decision you've made agrees with solving the problem of your addiction.
I hope this write-up has been able to give insight into the problems of addiction and ways of tackling them in a skillful way.
