in #airforce8 years ago

The primary mode of transportation for the U.S. President is by Air Force One. But there has been some discussion going on about reducing the size of the plane. Air Force One is the radio call name for the President’s transportation and there are some really fascinating facts about the plane.

Enough Room

Air Force One has a seat capacity of 70 people including staff, guests and officers. With that there are living quarters for Senior Advisors, Officers, reporters and other guests to fulfil the need of accommodation.

Refuelling in mid-air

I find it one of the most fascinating feature of the plane that it can be refuelled in mid - air if needed. The refuelling is done with the help of another plane that can hover over the president’s plane and transfer the fuel to the plane. It makes the plane to fly for indefinite time durations. It has been introduced to avoid any unsafe situations.

Mobile Command Center

Air Force One is a big oval shaped and have three levels. It has a space of around 4000 square feet that includes conference room, offices and anything that is needed to conduct any operation in the mid air. There is great medical facility with doctors on board to avoid any unwanted circumstances.

Speed and Height

The plane can travel with a speed of 600mph or 965km/h which is nearly equal to the speed of sound. The plane have enough power to attain an altitude of 13.75km or 45,100 feet whereas commercial flights can attain a maximum altitude of 9.1km or 30,000 feet.

Costs

According to FOIA, it costs around $206,337 per hour it flew in the air. It’s replacement will even be more expensive and estimated as $3.73 billion over 12 years. This is quite a small portion of the $8.132 defence budget over the same time.
