Common Heat Pump Problems and How to Fix Them
Heat pumps play an important role in providing heat during cold seasons. This is the reason why you should have it maintained for it to properly function consistently. Also, a well-maintained heat pump reduces the cause of damage repairs and parts replacements.
However, there will still be times when the unit will not function properly or at all due to some problems. Here are four common heat pump issues and what you should do about them.
- Heat pump won’t turn on.
This might be due to a lack of power. If this happens, check the settings of your thermostat to confirm if it is in heat mode and is set to a warmer temperature. You should also check your circuit breaker if the electric panel has tripped. Some thermostats are not compatible with heat pumps. In some cases, the problem results from improper wiring. Sensitive thermostat and heat pump components could cause thermostat failure if wirings are not properly positioned. If these don’t work, call your local HVAC technician to take care of them.
- Heat pump doesn’t heat or cool.
This is actually normal if the unit is in defrost mode. The system will return to its proper function after the defrost cycle is complete for about 10-15 minutes. If the system continues to blow off cold air, check your air filters. Dirty air filters are the most common cause of heat pump malfunctions. Any obstruction blocking the airflow can affect the performance of your heat pump. Some other causes are dust and dirt on the inside of the unit or dirty coils needing professional cleaning.
The same goes for cooling. Not blowing cool air might be due to the same causes of heating problems like blockages, dirt, or a need for a professional cleaning. Call your technician if the problem persists.
- Heat pump unable to blow off the air.
If your heat pump doesn’t produce air, some parts of the unit might be broken. In many cases, a broken belt is the most common problem. Some parts of the unit might be damaged or broken over time. If this problem occurs, you need to call your technician for repair or replacements. Another cause is ice buildup. Heat pumps can freeze or ice up during the harsh winter season. Ice blocks the airflow causing the unit to function poorly resulting in little or no air if the defrost cycle isn’t working, switch it off until the condenser defrosts before turning it back on.
- Improper Cycles of Heat Pumps.
You could be having thermostat issues if your heat pump is turning on and off. The thermostat might not be correctly adjusted or it is malfunctioning. Try to recalibrate or replace your thermostat.
Another cause of incorrect cycles is damaged filters. This prevents your heat pump from blowing. The solution is to clean or replace the filters while doing this, also check. If there is a defective fan or faulty valves. These too can be the reason for the improper functioning of your heat pump.
Heat pumps can last 10-20 years, depending on the frequency of usage. If you are using the same heat pump for over a decade with recurring problems, you should consider getting a new one. It will only cost you more for the repairs and parts replacements.
