To be sincere, tell me who among u on hearing the term broken heart begin to think of picture of a cartoon drawing with a jagged line through it.
I think almost all.
Right?
Let me tell u that you are NOT completely wrong.U r partly right because that thing which is in ur minds (lol.......breakup) can be sometimes responsible for BHS.
Is Breakup the sole factor responsible ?
No, there are other factors as well.So let us add to our knowledge What is "BROLEN HEART SYNDROME*?

Broken heart syndrome, also called stress-induced cardiomyopathy or takotsubo cardiomyopathy, is a type of non-ischemic cardiomyopathy in which there is a sudden temporary weakening of the part of muscular portion of the heart. This weakening may be triggered by emotional or physical STRESS.

Emotional stress such as the death of a loved one, a break-up, rejection from a partner, family disputes , constant anxiety, divorce, job loss, bussiness loss etc.

Physical stress, such as an asthma attack, a car accident or major surgery and some drugs like epinephrine, dobuxetine etc

By now it should be clear to u that y it is called stress induced carsiomyopathy.

Now why takotsubo and why broken heart?
"Takotsubo syndrome" comes from the Japanese word takotsubo (ja) "octopus trap," because the left ventricle takes on a shape resembling a fishing pot.There is bulging out of the left ventricular apex with a hypercontractile base giving it a shape of ectopis.

Presentation of BHS
Symptoms ( chest pain , breathlessnesss, arrthymias, shock ) and test results( ecg changes) of BHS are same as that oe heart attack.But unlike a heart attack, there’s no evidence rr0of blocked heart arteries and no rise in chemical aubstances in the blood in broken heart syndrome.

But one Q yet to be answerd is that, What is there is breakup etc which end up in BHS?
Let me tell you what it is?

(1)Transient vasospasm.
(2)Microvascular dysfunction.
(3)Catecholamine-induced myocyte injury.
(4)Mid-ventricular obstruction, apical stunning.

Prevention
Be kind to everyone u r somehow linked to.
Don't be emotionally labile.

Treatment
Fortunately , BHS does not require any treatment.The condition is transient and subside by itaelf but treatment may be required in case of untoward occurance like shock and arrthymias.
