Nearly an Air Collision?

Saw two contrails up in the sky and though it was pretty unusual. Turns out it was two airliners headed in the opposite directions. However, the trails show that they had at one point (at least looking upward), that they had crossed. Not sure how we can confirm this "near-miss".
