7 Steps To Breaking Habits

in #air-clinic6 years ago

Do you have a habit you’re struggling to break? Sometimes it can feel impossible.

We’ve all been there . According to a 60 Minutes/Vanity Fair poll, 41 percent of respondents said it would take a near-death experience to permanently break a bad habit!
But it’s not that terrible. Deeply ingrained habits are hard to break—but not impossible.

Today, I shall share with you 7 ways to Breaking Bad Habits. Come with me

What is a habit? A habit is clear terms is what

Anything you do repeatedly so as to get a reward becomes a habit
For every habit, there is a reward that comes with it. Hence, a loop .

There is a pleasure you derive from doing that particular thing such that you won’t derive the pleasure if you don’t do
It is not smoking or having sex that is the habit. No it isn’t.
It is not the watching of pornography that is the problem. No that is the not the habit here.
For there to be a habit, there has to be an end. The gratification of the end is why that habit exists.
Masturbating to sleep isn’t the real problem here.
The real problem is that you can’t sleep hence you need an aid to sleep

Now the 7 steps

Step 1. Admit the challenge
Half the power of habits is our lack of awareness : When we do become aware of a habit working against us, we have to admit it’s inhibiting our progress.
Say with me now “I have a problem with [fill in the blank].”
Did you find it difficult to mention the challenge, muster some courage and say it again Truth is you are not alone and won’t be the last but you are different

Step 2 : Understand How Habits work : Habits work using a 3 step process

The trigger : what you see with your eyes or sense with other organs

The behavior : Normally, we think of the behavior as the habit itself. But it’s only our response to the trigger.

The reward : More than the physical sensation we experience. .
Interestingly, we begin to experience the reward at the point of trigger . So think about the habit you want to break. Can you identify the trigger? Sometimes it’s obvious, but it might take some reflection.

Susan Courtney said : “We don’t have complete control over what we pay attention to”
“What we tend to look at, think about, and pay attention to is whatever we’ve done in the past that was rewarded.”

State What You Want

Once You’ve admitted the challenge, it’s time to state what you want. For example : I want to find other ways to relieve my anxiety besides smoking.
I want to eat healthy, delicious food, and exercise five days a week
Dear friend, it’s time to swap behaviours.
Step 4 Change Your Focus
Rather than fighting your own habit, change the focus . The goal is to keep the trigger and reward but change the behaviour.

Case Study : **Smoking **
The trigger : Maybe you feel anxious or see someone else smoking. You immediately start anticipating the reward
The behavior: You light a cigarette and inhale, a behavior that you normally associate with the reward.
The reward : Your brain and body relax.

Now keep the trigger and the reward the same but replace the behavior.
For example, every time you get the urge to light up, drink some water instead . The point is to find something you can do to change your focus to something different and better.

Step 5 : Check Your Progress
.This is important you track your progress because is not a feat to achieve in one day

Step 6: Accept that You cannot help Yourself
You cannot do it alone. You need outside help . Someone has already cracked the code, and they’re ready to serve.

Step 7 : Don’t Give Up. Stay the course
The final step is to simply persist. Keep at it until you consistently get the results you want.
