TEARS OF BLOOD- THE LASSA FEVER STORY; FOR AIR-CLINIC
Lassa fever is an acute viral haemorrhagic illness, transmitted to humans through contact with food or household items contaminated by infected rodents. Person-to-person transmission can also occur, particularly in hospital environment in the absence of adequate infection control measures.
LASSA is an endemic disease i.e it is native to a particular location, it originates where it occurs
Its major transmitter are RODENTS. This form of transmission is called Animal to Human infection called ZOONOTIC DISEASES e.g ebola
It is deadly& kills faster than other diseases.

Diagnosis
According to researchers, Lassa virus infections can only be diagnosed definitively in the laboratory using the following tests:
- reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) assay
- antibody enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA)
- antigen detection tests
- virus isolation by cell culture

Treatment/Cure
Be informed, there is currently no vaccine that protects against Lassa fever, it can only be prevented
Prevention
A chart showing prevention methods
Lassa fever can be prevented through the following measures:
Good personal hygiene and proper environmental sanitation
Store grain and other foodstuffs in rodent-proof containers, disposing of dirts far from residential homes, maintaining clean households, and other measures to disallow rodents from entering homes e.g cutting the bushes around the home
Hand washing should be done often, each home can provide hand sanitizers, its affordable and can be found in medical offices
Drying & frying of food items is also advisable in certain instances e.g cassava flakes
Avoid contact with blood and body fluids cos this is the quickest mode of this viral transfer
promote community hygiene
NB: Viral diseases do not have a specified cure, at least 98% of viral diseases often lead to death
It is advisable to avoid getting infected than looking for cure. Prevention is better than cure
