AIR-CLINIC WEEKLY CONTEST: A SHORT STORY ON ABORTION

In a layman's definition, abortion can be simply put as the termination of a pregnancy. Most people especially in Africa believe every abortion usually ends with a regret, this is not true if it is done under good medical advice.

It was few days to our convocation, Lizzy a classmate and female friend of mine came to visit me, I offered her drink and we started gisting on how interesting our convocation would be when she narrated an ordeal that almost terminate her ambition of being an engineer when we were in 200 level. She told me about how she got pregnant and how she was able to dealt with a situation that was going to put an end to her ambition.

I don't want to go into details of how she got pregnant although the situation was strange, but pregnancy is what happens sometimes when adults of opposite sex with functional sex organs have unprotected sex and an abortion is what happens when a woman becomes pregnant and does not wish to procreate.

Lizzy took a pregnancy test in her bathroom one morning few weeks after she was gang raped by a group of men she could not identify. She was sort of lost in herself when she glanced down and saw the positive sign on the test. She could have seek medical advice earlier or even take the morning after pill after the incident, but she didn't do all of that and now she is pregnant. She didn't even tell any of her family members she was raped. She will be rusticated out of school because pregnancy is not allowed. All this was going through her mind when she heard the sound of her phone, it was a call from her aunty Lisa.

She picked the call and tremble as she speaks with her aunty. Aunty Lisa was sensitive enough to notice everything is not right with Lizzy. She invited her for dinner that day and aunty Lisa was able to persuade Lizzy at dinner to pour out her mind. She told her aunty about the rape and pregnancy.

Her aunty who is a doctor in one recognized private hospital administer abortion pill to her since the pregnancy is in its early stage and the pregnancy was aborted without any complications. Lizzy was able to achieve her dream of becoming an engineer and is happy after all. The End.

I don't see anything bad in abortion since it is a thing you do to remove unwanted detritus from your life. Why do anyone have to destroy their life by keeping children they can't cater for.

It is perfectly reasonable to feel happy that you were not forced to become a mother when you're not ready.
