AIR-CLINIC WRITING CONTEST: NATURAL SERIOUS WARNING

A month ago my father-in-law died at the age of 77, after suffering for three weeks in the military hospital in Caracas, Venezuela. His diagnosis: PULMONARY CANCER. My father-in-law devoted his entire life to repairing refrigerators and air conditioners. For the practice of his trade, acetylene welding is used, which releases toxic gases and since he never took the necessary precautions, doctors speculate that it may have been the cause of his cancer, since he was never a cigarette smoker.

A frequent cough was part of his personality. His stories, loaded with teachings and good humor, were always interrupted by a cough break, which served as an excuse to take a breath and laugh.

We will remember him as a cheerful and hard-working man who never liked going to the doctor even though he always had a persistent cough. He preferred to treat himself with natural preparations. According to knowledge inherited from his mother, he could make concoctions, ointments or liquids for friction, using leaves, bark or roots of vegetable species native to my country. This is a very common practice throughout Venezuela. Currently, it is accentuated by the lack of medications such as antiallergics, espectorantes and bronchodilators.

In my country there are very adverse weather conditions. One day it can dawn very sunny and dazzling and suddenly we have a torrential rain. It is common to find people with the flu, who cough and sneeze in congested public transport units. All this meets the necessary conditions for the endemic transmission of diseases of pulmonary character.

Whatever the origin, the Cough is always a sign of a respiratory condition. In addition to being a natural reaction of the organism for the expulsion of secretions, it also indicates that something is wrong. For this we must pay close attention to this SERIOUS NATURAL WARNING and not proceed as my father-in-law did, who did not pay due attention to the signals of his organism.
