Blame it on the society, blame it on the health system, blame it on the wayward youths, whoever your blame goes to, you wouldn't be wrong, the recent rise in promiscuity and abortion has shown the extent of moral decadence and murder has never been glorified until now.
Unfortunate as it is, the recent medical developments have simplified the act more and has made it cheaper. Amidst religious and humanitarian campaigns, the act haven't been curtailed to any reasonable extent, this is because human activities that leads to unwanted pregnancy is on the increase as couples and the unmarried ones indulge in this act for different reasons.
While couples abort babies for population control and other reasons which to them is tangible, unmarried youths abort babies due to the consequences they may face as parents, combined with the shame and also their future which might be damned due to having a baby, they prefer to terminate the foetus.
Babies are precious gifts from God, if this is so for everyone, why get rid of them? abortion is murder and the earlier we get to understand it, the better for us.
Many ladies are however pushed into abortion by their partner, their parents, friends, and even their partner's parents, therefore campaigns against abortion should be focused not only on youths but everyone in the society.
The health system should also realize that not only is abortion religiously unhealthy, but it is no in compliance with the normal medical ethics and as a result should refrain from carrying out abortion exercises and also amend any of their teachings that supports this shameful act; they should also strengthen their campaigns on protected / healthy sex so as to curb unwanted pregnancy.
The government should also play their role in setting out laws which bans this act with properly spelled out punishment. Even though this might not bring it to an end as most cases go unreported and are not handled by any health professional. But remember, if you abort a baby, you abort a leader.

Abortion as we know is a crime in Nigeria with the exception that if giving birth to a child will cause harm to the woman or girl then abortion is legal. There are laws already in place that prohibit the act of abortion in Nigeria: the Criminal code (southern Nigeria) and penal code (Nothern Nigeria).

Specifically, the sections prohibiting abortion in the south are sections 228, 229, 230 of the criminal code. Section 228 prohibit and punishes anyone who aids another in committing miscarriage(abortion) by 14 years imprisonment. Sections 229 prohibits and punishes anyone who causes herself miscarriage(abortion) by 7 years imprisonment.

In the North, the sections prohibiting abortion are section 232, 233 and 234 of the penal code. However these sections are in pari material(similar in wordings) with the provisions stated in the criminal code.

That is to say that the government have put in place laws prohibiting abortion but these laws do not cover the field, that is there exist a/some lacuna(loopholes) in the already made laws.

Therefore, there is the need to revisit and amend the laws.

The above is my opinion as a law student.

Wonderful @sachy
