A 26 year old lady called Uju was carried in a very bad state to the Emergency Room in University of Nigeria teaching hospital, Ituku Ozalla. When she arrived, she was hypoglycemic, severely hypotensive with impaired consciousness.
Two days earlier to the patient’s admission, according to one of her family members who started Uju was complaining of myalgia, malaise, anorexia, abdominal pain and vomiting. The history taken from the family member has shown that Uju was advised by a friend of hers to be using tablets known as ''annajma'' bought from a local market, for the last 6 months to gain weight, as she thought she was too skinny. Uju personally has stopped her medicine 3 days earlier, because she thought they were useless.

The tablets were taken into the laboratory and later identified as dexamethasone 2mg tablets. Laboratory investigations also revealed sodium blood level of 124 mEq/ml(normal 135 - 145mEq/ ml), blood sugar was 50 mg/ dl (normal 150 mg/ dl). Blood pressure measurement was 50/ 40 mm Hg (normal 120/ 80 mm Hg). The treatment for adrenal crisis was instituted . Uju was immediately cannulated for IV access, and given treatment in form of dextrose, normal saline, and hydrocortisone planned to continue the treatment for the following 48 hours.

Unfortunately, Uju’s condition deteriorated, and passed.
So sad it ended that way and every member of her family instantly realized the dangers of self-medication.

This is an outstanding message to the public creating awareness about the risks involved with self-medications and the hitches of obtaining medication items from sources other than pharmacies when not issued by a professional doctor.
