Self-medication is simply the self-treatment of health issues without medical supervision or approval.
The nonprescription medicine or over the counter drugs (OTC) is rampant and available in pharmacies, supermarkets, and other outlets in major countries today.
Self-medication is as a result of customer searching for self-care products to help them through the so called ‘common health problems’. They do so because they think it’s easier for them, cost and time efficient, thinking their situation does not warrant an appointment with a health-care professional or they may have few or no other options.
Self-medication has become one of the major threats to our world. In a country like Nigeria, it is quite disastrous. You could hear persons saying they hardly visit hospitals anymore, I just know what to take and I will be just fine! Studies have showed that people are extremely careful when they do turn to nonprescription medicines. You could see them reading the label after purchasing a drug. Examples will show that 73 percent of individuals will rather treat themselves at home rather than see a doctor. In this article I will be outlining ‘the dangers of self-medication’
A large number of persons when sick don’t consult the professionals. They either consult a chemist or neighbors who may be having leftover drugs from previous illness. Drugs which are sold over the counter (OTC) could include cough syrups, pain relievers, laxatives, vitamins, and many more. Note every dangerous/harmful medicine is like an antibiotics and could be self-procured.
The potential risk of self-medication includes: incorrect self-diagnosis, incorrect manner of administration, incorrect dosage intake, Choice of therapy, delay in seeking professional advice, abuse of drugs or dependence, to mention but a few.

Yes, self medication is very dangerous to the health, because one might think he needs an aspirin not knowing what is needed is a different drug. There's dis woman in my neighborhood whom her son fell ill, only for her to go to a nearby chemist to get some drugs including antibiotics. At the end he was diagnosed of anaemia due to inadequate use of antibiotics
